Publisher Description

THE FANTASY BOOKTOK SENSATION!

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom—but the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.

Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.

Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom she calls home—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.

But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the Destriers…and guilty of high treason.

He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

Thumbs Up“ok...very different than expected in a good way. Looking forward to the second book. It took a bit to get going but once it started...it started..what does the nightmare do next?!?!?!”
Anxious Face with sweat“This book was so well written! It flows beautifully and the world building is immaculate.”
“Spooky and magical! 👍🏼 LOVE the rhymes and little snippets of lore woven throughout this story. So cohesive and well thought out. Even if some things were predictable, the excepts from the book of alders really tied it all together for me. 👍🏼The cards! The imagery of the glowing cards. Very fun. 👍🏼 the nightmare in her mind was so vivid to me. RG did a great job communicating Elsbeth’s experience being haunted or possessed, without making it overly dark or disturbing. 👍🏼 the romance with Ravyn was fine. Honestly I think this story was interesting enough that it wasn’t necessary. But a nice subplot. 👎🏼 the plot moved a little bit slow in the first half. And overall I think the stakes feel low. 👎🏼 not sensing a lot of connection between the characters other than Ravyn and the nightmare. Could use some better group dialogue to get more from each of the characters. Overall beautiful writing and a magical story, but I’m not rushing to the sequel.”
