About the Folio

As a child, I read everything I could get my hands on. When I became immersed in a book’s world and characters, I always felt profoundly sad to leave that experience. To this very day, when I’m reading a particularly good book, I consciously slow down for the last chapters because I know with the conclusion of the story, comes the inevitable sadness. I’ve dedicated my life to the power of storytelling because great stories bring us all together. For my Folio, I’ve chosen the powerful books I consider must-reads.

About “Roots”

Forty-five years ago, I played the young Kunta Kinte in the miniseries based on Alex Haley’s 1976 novel. Alex won the Pulitzer and the series won nine Emmys, attracting an audience of more than 255 million souls. We came to a better, deeper, and more informed understanding of the evil nature, intent, and outcomes of chattel slavery as practiced in America. This book showed me the power of storytelling to bridge the gap between races, and this is the perfect moment to read or reread this monumental work.
