What makes a book young adult vs. adult?
While readers of all ages love YA literature, the books speak directly to young readers and build a safe space for them to understand themselves better by exploring different identities, experiences, and points-of-view.
Teen librarian Meredith Sires stresses that these books for teens allow young readers to broaden their horizons and step outside the confines of home. She explains why these influential books for young adults matter in a heartfelt essay:
“Young adult fiction is shining a light on the ways people of color are affected by mental health struggles as well as their options for coping. While not a replacement for traditional therapy, stories like these can start conversations, provide comfort, and be the first step to feeling a little less isolated.”
What are the best books to read for young adults?
The best YA books can make young readers feel less isolated and learn ways to cope with the problems they face in the journey to adulthood.

Fable’s resident YA expert is TikTok creator Selene Velez (moongirlreads).
She created a Folio with diverse book recommendations and launched a book club dedicated to the genre. Selene moderates the YA Book Club, and her first pick was "Last Night at the Telegraph Club," a novel by Asian American author Malinda Lo
Lo co-founded Diversity in YA, a site that championed inclusion in young adult books, from race to sexual orientation to gender identity and disability.
You can also read unapologetically queer YA books with TikTok creator @literarylesbian in our Queer YA Club. They shared Queer YA book recommendations in their Folio as well:
“The goal of my account has always been to help younger readers find the representation they need, as I didn’t get the same when I was their age. This mindset is reflected in my picks in the young adult and LGBTQ+ genre.”
