Bel Canto

By Ann Patchett
Ann Patchett’s amazing novel “Bel Canto,” about a gathering of opera-loving businessmen and politicians just before a coup breaks out in a South American country, is on my must-read list because 1) she’s one of my favorite writers and her book inspired the name of our bookstore, 2) of the way this book beautifully complicates the easy opposition between hero and villain, and 3) it’s a smart page-turner that will leave you breathless until the end.
