How to Stay Human

Curated by Tiffany Shlain

About the Curator
Tiffany Shlain is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, founder of the Webby Awards, and author of the national bestselling book 24/6: Giving up Screens One Day a Week to Get More Time, Creativity, and Connection, winner of the Marshall McLuhan Outstanding Book Award.

About the Folio

These books all explore our humanity, technology, and creativity, subjects I delve into in my book “24/6.” Some go deep into what happens if we don’t create a screen-free space, and some illustrate the wonderful things that can happen when we do. They help us see when technology amputates or amplifies who we are and how to find the difference.

The Circle

The Circle

By Dave Eggers
I’ve always loved Dave Eggers’ work because he makes so many different genres come alive and has such a distinct voice in each. “The Circle” is a favorite because it takes all these things we worry about — screen addiction, privacy — to the nth degree. While it’s incredibly dystopian, it makes a profound point showing how quantifying, surveilling, and comparing are such an unhealthy way to live individually and as a society. I also like that it’s set in the near future — it feels very accessible and familiar.
