About the Folio

I had a life-changing experience in my 7th Grade English class. We had to write book reports about classic novels and present them in front of the class. I was bubbling over with excitement about these books with heroes like Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes, desperately trying to convince my friends to read them. As a kid, I thought it would be great to have a job reading all the time. I ended up becoming an actor, playwright, and film historian, but I managed to read 36 books last year. If I could read faster, I’d read twice as many. I still love stories about heroes, but to me, the word “hero” has more to do with being true to oneself and living life to the fullest.

The Lady in the Lake

The Lady in the Lake

By Raymond Chandler
I get asked a lot what my favorite books are, and Chandler novels are always on the list. I get the same thrill reading him now that I got when I first discovered him in my 20s and decided to read everything he ever wrote. This book is like a time machine. I’m instantly transported to Los Angeles in the 1940s. Even though I never set foot in Los Angeles (or anywhere else) in the 1940s, I feel like I could live in this world because I understand it and it’s so familiar. It has to do with the way Chandler wrote—his figures of speech are extraordinary in their originality and their illuminative properties. His style of dialogue and the way his characters express themselves is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Nobody talks this way in real life, but people ought to talk this way.
