Toxic Positivity
By Whitney Goodman, LMFT
Everything happens for a reason … They are in a better place…. Good vibes only…
Ever wonder why these platitudes make you feel angry or unheard? Something terrible has happened in your life and the messages you keep hearing are that it is all ok. You’re fine. It’s ALL FINE.
Turns out most of us have no idea how to be with people in pain. We rush to make everything better as soon as possible because we are uncomfortable with discomfort.
That doesn’t work for me. I want to really connect with people and help them feel seen and heard. Especially when things are tough. I also want people to be there for me!
“Toxic Positivity: Keeping It Real in a World Obsessed with Being Happy” by Whitney Goodman shares research that shows the damage toxic positivity does to the relationships that we have with others and ourselves. She gives us simple tips for getting comfortable with discomfort that allows us to show up for our relationships in a more real and connected way.
