About the Folio

Shorter days and weaker sunlight can put anyone in a mood, whether or not they suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. So I pulled together a few books known for bringing light into our lives. From warm novels to a rousing recommendation for candles and coffee, these books are a bright spot on dark days.

By Sarah Winman
Ron Charles at the Washington Post described this new novel as “a tonic for wanderlust and a cure for loneliness,” which is more or less all I’m ever looking for. A beautifully written celebration of art, love, and friendship, the book begins in 1944 in Tuscany and chronicles the decades-long friendship between a young English soldier and a gay, middle-aged art historian. A book that makes you appreciate beauty in all its forms, from the most ordinary of moments to the sublime.
