Hell of a Book: National Book Award Winner

Best Book For: The Book Clubber.
This was a tricky one — a glance at our public clubs demonstrates just how wide-ranging (or should we say wide-reading) book clubs can be. So we went with a book likely to appeal to as many readers as possible: Jason Mott’s “Hell of a Book.” This National Book Award-winning novel is many things: a cross-country road trip tale; a satire of the publishing industry; a story of magical realism, featuring a mysterious ghost-like boy; and an examination of what it means to be Black in America, especially in the wake of police violence. It’s also, quite often, hilarious. And with a seal of approval from the National Book Awards and the Read With Jenna book club, plus our own custom-written discussion prompts, you should feel comfortable giving this book to the most discerning book clubbers on your list.
