About the Folio

I try to read a story or poem every night before bed. It’s the best way I know to calm my scattered brain after a day of Zoom meetings, emails, and child-care. Science backs me up on this, as one study found that reading can reduce stress levels by 68 percent! This month, I chose three great poetry collections, complete with brief audio readings to carry you peacefully to dreamland.

An audio recording of his poetry

“Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend before we too into the Dust descend” Omar Khayyám was a medieval Iranian mathematician, philosopher, scholar, and poet. Translator Edward FitzGerald took extreme artistic license with his famous translation of Khayyám’s quatrains, turning disconnected verses into a loose narrative for English-speaking readers. The book triggered a poetic revolution in Victorian England upon its release—one critic compared the impact of this book to the effect of Darwin’s theory of evolution.
