What book makes you want to go outside?
Whenever I need to reconnect with nature, I turn to “Underland: A Deep Time Journey” by Robert Macfarlane. The author is one of our great nature writers, describing underground worlds in the most captivating way. The book moves along geologic timelines, exploring everything from prehistoric art to the Greenland ice cap.
Reading his stories, I just want to go outside and touch grass. My fellow Fable editors shared their favorite books about nature. Add yours in the comments!
Cameron Capello: I know "All Rhodes Lead Here" isn’t technically an outdoorsy book, but I'll take any excuse to gush about a slow-burn romance. The mountain town and hiking vibes feel so real, and Rhodes is the ultimate grumpy-yet-swoon-worthy outdoorsy guy. It’s cozy, heartfelt, and makes me want to hit the trails—or just reread for the romance!
Hayley Dennings: This isn’t technically an outdoorsy book, but “Rest is Resistance” does a great job of encouraging people to take a break and connect with the world. Whenever I’m super stressed or busy, I always remember the words in this book, urging me to slow down and go outside.
Ellen Savage: “Raiders of the Lost Heart” by Jo Segura follows Dr. Soccoro “Corrie” Mejia. When Corrie is given the opportunity to join the dig of a lifetime, she can’t turn it down, even if it happens to be led by her rival, Dr. Ford Matthews. Stuck in close quarters at their remote campsite, they need to work together as the dig is threatened by smugglers. Filled with passion, adventure, and more than a little spice, “Raiders of the Lost Heart” is perfect for lovers of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones.
Desiree Worrall-Belanger: Whenever I’m asked this question, I tend to answer with “The Hidden Life of Trees” by Peter Wolhlleben, so I’ll try to recommend something different this time around! I think “Evergreen” by Lydia Millen is another fun, outdoors-y book. To be honest, I only bought it because of the cover, but the way that Lydia shares her advice on living with the seasons – both those outside and those within ourselves – made for quite the interesting read.
