Celebrating 80 years since D-Day
Today officially marks 80 years since D-Day. The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, June 6th, 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history.
For all my history lovers, I thought I could share a mix of both nonfiction and fiction books to learn a bit more about this specific moment in history, and WWII as well.
Starting off with a personal favorite of mine, this book is set during WWI, but switches timelines to WWII: “Lovely War” by Julie Berry. This is one of my favorite books of all time as it combines Greek mythology with WWI and WWII. It’s filled with emotion and heartache, but also hope and comfort in times of darkness. Getting to see Aphrodite, Ares, Apollo, Hades, and Hephaestus all interact and argue over their own conflicts (iykyk) but also allowing each God and Goddess to tell their part in the story of two young mortal couples during the war, had my attention from the very first page.
If you’re looking for more historical fiction set during WWII, check out these titles:
“The Night Watch” by Sarah Waters or “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak.
Now for some nonfiction that specifically discusses D-Day!
I recommend “March Past” by Lord Lovat, “Forgotten Voices of D-Day” by Roderick Bailey, or “Slightly Out of Focus” by Robert Capa.
