What’s your best memory of J.R.R. Tolkien stories?
Happy Tolkien Reading Day! The Tolkien Society created this holiday to celebrate the legacy of J.R.R. Tolkien, creator of The Lord of the Rings series.
We gather on March 25th every year to share memories of reading about Middle Earth, the magical setting of Tolkien’s most famous books (and the immortal movies they inspired).
There’s no better place to begin with Tolkien than “The Hobbit.”
My dad had a battered hardcover of “The Hobbit” he picked up in Europe, and it was one of my most treasured possessions as a kid. The intricate drawings on the slipcover (drawn by Tolkien himself, I discovered years later) fascinated me. It began a reading journey for me as I started reading every book on his bookshelf. I am so grateful I found that book!
Share your memories in the comments. I’ve collected a few tributes from our community.
“My dad read me The Hobbit in elementary school and then wouldn’t let me see go to the LOTR midnight releases unless I read the books. Super effective strategy! Now I read every single day.”
— Meredith Rowe
“The Hobbit initially brought me into reading because my mom read them to me and the rest of my siblings so she gave me her copy and I still have it (but I use my mini version now.)”
— Lyndsi McKay
“The Hobbit was the first fantasy book I'd ever read. It opened up multiple doors and worlds for me! I will forever be indebted to the gifter for that!”
— The Book Witch
“It took me 17 years to read The Hobbit. Started it in middle school when the Lord of the Rings movies came out but never got back around to it until I finished grad school, much later in life, and got my kickstart back into reading!”
— Courtney P.
“I usually will re-read The Hobbit every year or so, which I've done since I was 16 (read it originally when I was 13 as per family tradition).”
— Eddie
