I’m genuinely in so much pain like my heart hurts. Such a beautiful book with the absolute perfect ending that I didn’t know I needed. Proceed with caution: devastating and will make you cry 🥰

I’d give this 20 out of 5 stars if I could!. It's one of the best books I've read and I think should be compulsory reading for every fantasy fan out there. Saying it's a dark academia is doing it so much injustice and trivializes how tragic, philosophical, multilayered and relevant this book is. BOBH explores such heavy themes from many unique view points, especially the MC’s! I can't stop talking about this book, this is my first MLW book (haven't read Sword of Kaigen yet) but I will be a lifelong fan of her. If I had to really explain the vibes of what this book is, it has the same feelings as The Hunchback of Notre Dame x Attack on Titan x Babel. It's a lot of tragedy, a lot of institutionalised secrecy and monstrosity, and a lot of religious philosophy, but at its core it's a story about love, hope, and the desire to leave a better and more honest world behind.

🎧 Immersive 📚 Ah shit… that was perfect…
TL;DR: This. was. INCREDIBLE. The characters were nuanced, relatable, endearing, fun, and easy to root for. The plot was PERFECTLY paced, with an incredible hook and mystery right from the start that made me never want to put it down. The writing was straightforward but never dry — always accessible, full of emotion, and got my eyes watering more than once. Audiobook is also a must 😉
It’s been a long time since I’ve ruined my sleep schedule for a book, but here we are. I LOVE RYLAND AND ROCKY 😭😭🫶 Right from the get-go I fell in love with Ryland’s character and his love for the children of mankind. The first utterance of “my kids” and I was HOOKED. The fact that that drove him to do everything he does in this book makes him such a compelling character straight away. And as we learned more about him, I just kept falling in love with every little aspect of his character: his motivations, his fears, his humour, his intelligence, his protectiveness, his humanness, his dialogue — just everything!
When he meets Rocky (the most endearing character ever to exist, ever) they build such a beautiful bromance that touches on so many aspects of the human soul: curiosity about alien culture, healthy communication despite differences, unlikely bonds, healthy male friendship, sacrificing for your fellow man, and true familial love. I would DIE for these two. And their DEVELOPMENT by the end!! By meeting each other, their characters change and grow in a slow but steady way that feels so natural and is so heartwarming. I JUST LOVE THESE TWO AND THEIR FRIENDSHIP!!!
The side characters were incredible too — each so distinct, with their own personalities and effects on the narrative. Stratt was particularly compelling to me. She’s so morally grey, always a jerk but never on a personal level, and ultimately doing everything she can to ensure the survival of the human race, which makes her such a fascinating character to me. ALL of these characters though are flawed in their own nuanced ways, but united by a shared desire to see mankind survive, which made them all so easy to root for. It’s easy to put yourself in their shoes because their problems tap into something deeply human and universally relatable.
The central plot was SOOO compelling and immediately hooked me — this very human problem with seemingly no solution, full of desperation we can all understand. I felt allllll the emotions as the characters struggled through it. I also really appreciated how proactive everyone was in working toward a solution — no time was wasted, which I reallyyyyy appreciated. The dual timeline worked so well for pacing and mystery and just propelled me forward. I always wanted to know what was coming next. And I wasn’t expecting twists near the end, but there were TWISTS!! Really good ones that made sense for all the characters and hit them deeply. This was just a 👏 PLOT 👏 DONE 👏 RIGHT 👏
The writing was also so good!! This book was HILARIOUSSSS. The dialogue was out-of-this-world quality, everything was so engaging, and I love a book that can make me laugh and cry in equal measure. The way Weir pulls these emotions out of me so effortlessly needs to be studied. The writing wasn’t flowery — very straightforward — but that actually worked perfectly for all the science content. I was apprehensive going in because I thought I (an art student) was going to struggle soooo much with the science jargon, but Weir explains everything in such a digestible, accessible way that even a simpleton like me could follow 😆
And the audiobook elevated everything to a whole other level — THEY’RE RIGHT Y’ALL. THE AUDIOBOOK IS A MUST!!! It was amaze amaze amaze. Ray Porter is so talented and was absolutely perfect for Ryland. The sound effects and voice work were so good — little things like voice cracks and gasps make such a difference, and they were all there. This audiobook made me cry, so it’s immediately a 10/10 🙂↕️👌
So. I cried. I laughed. I smiled. I gasped aloud. I cringed. I never wanted to put it down. THEREFORE: this book has well and truly met my high five-star expectations and deserves every single star. It’s been a loooooong time since I found a perfect five-star read on a first read-through, y’all — I was beginning to think they no longer existed. So, celebration!! Fist my bump 👊🤩 This book deserves all its flowers. Why is there not more??! Sad sad sad 😭
