Maybe my favorite book in the series so far, it expands beyond Navarre and becomes more political, which I personally enjoy a lot.
This novel in the series especially feels like I'm constantly trying to be convinced that Violet and Xaden are in love, of course they are but it feels exaggerated. Maybe I'm just not a fan of spice but the sheer amount spice scenes and the length of them feels absurd and unecessary to the story- not adding anything to the relationship or story. I mean, a chapter long spice scene..? Some people for sure enjoyed it, just not for me.
🟥(SPOILERS FOR FOURTH WING AND IRON FLAME) Characters throughout this series have been likeable, none are particularly annoying or unrealistically capable. Xaden can be somewhat cringe but I think it's just part of their lovey dovey relationship. Brennan was a big reveal at the end of the first novel, introducing the rebellion and all but he's barely in this addition to the series, he doesn't feel important at all even though his bond with Lilith was highlighted before her death. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion which is fair but Cat is probably my favorite character, she developed well and she's super charming. 🟥
Looking forward to the next of Yarros' novels, the ending was a CRAZY cliffhanger as always, 2027 feels like too long a wait... 😞

I wasn’t sure how I felt about this at first because of Warner but suddenly I was so captivated into finishing it and I wasn’t disappointed in the end. I love Adam especially with how sweet he is towards his little brother. but I don’t love Warner’s character at all. I guess he changed in the other books since everyone claims to love him.

3.75/5 ⭐️ rounded up - Listen, I WANTED to be obsessed with this book. I pre-ordered it and ripped open the package when it arrived with embarrassing intensity. I yearned for it to be better then Quicksilver (which I rated 4.25 -I still mentally debate whether it should be a 4 but alas). Overall... Brimstone fell a bit flat for me. Personally. I always did say I enjoyed these books DESPITE the writing, and Brimstone did not prove me wrong.
Lets start with the GOOD: the character and relationship development. The brotherly relationship between Kingfisher and Carrion was fun to watch unfold. I loved that we got to know Tal more and the introduction of Foley and the entire vampire court was entertaining. Also, Onyx was very much involved in this sequel much to my delight! I can also highlight really the only character development Saeris obtains, which seems to be a general boost in confidence in her ability to lead and manage her magic. Lastly, we also learn A LOT more about Kingfisher's lore especially towards the end of the book and leading into the 'cliffhanger'.
Now the MEH: Call me daft, but I really don't understand where Callie Hart is going with the magic system in Brimstone. It very much gives off a system of convenience.
"OMG, there's this problem no one knows how to deal with!" "OMG, you just discovered an ancient form of magic no one has ever used and basically solves the problem?? Perfect!" <-- that is how I felt many problems were solved. Saeris is given an avalanche of magical powers related to her connection to the Gods, to Alchemy, to her mated bond of Kingfisher, to Tal, to... you get it. It felt like every other chapter she was receiving some new ability that it felt a tad lazy on the writers part. Not to mention there is an *almost* character death in the last half that, and this is going to sound barbaric, might've actually made this 4 star had it been done properly, as it was very emotion provoking. But nope, Saeris saves the day with ancient magic never thought possible, immediately erasing any stakes or buildup of emotions.
Which brings me to the NOT GOOD: Geez, I did not remember the writing being this insufferable in the first book actually. Now, let me reveal my own bias. I am reading Brimstone after finishing Babel by R.F. Kuang and the Will of the Many by James Islington, some of the most spectacular well written pieces of fiction I've ever read. So when I picked up Brimstone and read "I suppose if no one else is going to say it, then I will. You look downright fuckable Saeris Fane"... I did cringe internally. But I reminded myself, this is the Quicksilver-verse. It is very spicy and spice can come with cringe. That is sometimes part of the fun! So I trudge on.
The amount of times "mate" is used in this book is criminal. And don't get me started on the use of 'female/male'... it was as if Hart was intentionally being repetitive because she thought it sounded bold or maybe hot? Instead half way in I wanted to scratch my eyes every time "my mate" was forced upon my eyeballs. I truly do not remember it being SO bad in the first book, but perhaps I am just far enough removed from it I have forgotten. Either way, Brimstone has about 3-4 nouns it uses to describe it's characters gender or relation to someone, which for me started to grate against my enjoyment of the book.
I must say it is unfortunate I read such fantastic books before Brimstone, as I do feel it made its mediocrity stand out more as my standards for fantasy as increased substantially. While I do not regret buying/spending my two days binging the Brimstone, I am not sure if I am interested in continuing the series unless the writing quality increases considerably.

this started strong plot wise, but I didn’t get FULLY invested in the characters until like 30-40% in. and from then on it just kept going up.
the ending added the extra .5 for me!!! I was GOBSMACKEDDDD!!!! so so so good
