📱 eBook 📱 And with that, my Arcanum Unbounded journey finally comes to an end! 🥹 TL;DR: Definitely not Sando’s strongest work imo, but not the worst either! It had all the classic hallmarks of a Sando story — structures, originality, and twists — but the character arcs were clunky and the worldbuilding (while still very Sando) felt a bit underdeveloped to me 👀 I honestly don’t have that much to say about this one — I thought it was good! I enjoyed the plot and was engaged from beginning to end. The pacing was great, the mysteries were mysterying, and the ending was satisfying. My favourite part was probably the politics — Sando squeezed in so many elements in such a short space, and it still managed to be consistently engaging. The plot twists were also fun in classic Sando fashion (though some of the bigger ones were a bit predictable). There were a lot of loose ends (the face in the sky, Darkside, the Starmarked, Sand Lord??), but I think Sando intends to return to this world someday, so I’m hoping we get some proper answers eventually. I really want to see more of Darkside!! As for the art itself, I genuinely loved seeing some of the Cosmere in a visual medium — I desperately want more visual Cosmere projects one day 😫 The art wasn’t anything groundbreaking, and the art style changes were a bit jarring (even though none of them were particularly bad). Sometimes it wasn’t totally clear what was happening in a scene — characters talking weren’t looking at each other, or scenes would jump abruptly with no explanation — but nothing disastrous. My only major visual gripe was the fonts. They were SO hard to read sometimes!! They used Comic Sans for most of the text, which was… unoriginal and not very pleasant, but I get why. But then for the side “lore” text they used this nearly UNREADABLE loopy font that slowed me down sooo much and (as a graphic designer) pissed me off lmao 🤣 Graphic novels are not my usual forte, but I had to read this for the Cosmere, so keep in mind I don’t exactly have the credentials to critique the graphic side accurately 😆 Storywise, I had a few issues with the characters, dialogue, and worldbuilding too. A lot of the characters felt a bit like caricatures to me, with fairly shallow personalities and/or basic motivations. Their development was often stated super bluntly in the dialogue — like someone would literally say “I’ve changed” — but their growth usually happened in completely random scenes or for no real reason. Just little things like that that wore on me after a while. The worldbuilding was interesting but also somehow both convoluted and shallow at the same time. There were heaps of different world building elements going on (too many, honestly) but none were explored thoroughly enough or were even necessary imo. And there were SO many fantasy terms that sounded way too similar — I got confused more than once and eventually just gave up trying to absorb it 😅 So, turns out I did have a lot to say 🙈 But overall, I’d still say this is a worthy read — even more so if you’re working your way through the Cosmere. I really hope Sando comes back to this world someday (ik we’ve already seen more of our queen Khriss 😏), because there’s so much more I want to explore. This story worked really well as a graphic novel, so I can only imagine an animated adaptation would be absolutely MAGNIFICENT 🤩
