Crying in H Mart is raw and intimate, a tough read at times but written in such an accessible way that it pulls you right in. It’s powerful, emotional, and lingers with you long after you finish.

Sometimes you just have to kimchi and let go.
I took a two-year hiatus before finally finishing Crying in H Mart - proof that some DNFs are just right book, wrong time.
It feels strange to rate something this personal. Michelle Zauner writes so specifically about food, culture, and her mother that the memoir often feels like it was written first and foremost for herself. Her experiences are unabashedly Asian, and I saw pieces of myself in her reflections on belonging and in-betweenness.
I especially appreciated her honesty about the sides of grief no one likes to talk about - jealousy, resentment, selfishness - not just the profound sadness.
Of course, I was sobbing by the midpoint. The back half, which follows her slow reclamation of self through food and memory, felt like a victory.
This is for readers who see food as memory and identity.

Michelle Zauner narrating her own personal memoir is by far the most beautiful and emotionally moving listening experience I've ever had 😭
This heart-wrenching retelling of loss, grief and perservence with losing your mother to Cancer at such a young age (in both of their lives) broke me in ways I cannot describe with words. It was so raw and filled with vivid memories, all surrounding how her mother showed affection and love via food and her cooking, and the devastating impact of losing her at that time in her life. This book will have you literally crying in H Mart (while also making you so hungry for such delicious and nurturing Korean meals)
Please. Read. This. Book. 😭💔🫂 (Especially for fans of Japanese Breakfast and Little Big League)

I can’t believe it took me this long to read this. I love Anthony Bourdain’s sense of humor and humanity. This is hilarious, dark, deeply honest, humble, and fascinating. I listened to this on audiobook so I could hear his voice again. So soothing. And such a brilliant, creative mind. I still miss him so much and I’m really glad I read this. 🥹
