Zoo City
ByPublisher Description
A new edition of Lauren Beukes's Arthur C Clarke Award-winning novel set in a world where murderers and other criminals acquire magical animals that are mystically bonded to them.
Zinzi has a Sloth on her back, a dirty 419 scam habit, and a talent for finding lost things. When a little old lady turns up dead and the cops confiscate her last paycheck, Zinzi's forced to take on her least favorite kind of job -- missing persons.
Being hired by reclusive music producer Odi Huron to find a teenybop pop star should be her ticket out of Zoo City, the festering slum where the criminal underclass and their animal companions live in the shadow of hell's undertow. Instead, it catapults Zinzi deeper into the maw of a city twisted by crime and magic, where she'll be forced to confront the dark secrets of former lives -- including her own.

“Beukes’ Second Novel Showcases an Original Voice Hidden Within a Fairly Straightforward Plot
Having only read The Shining Girls upon its release, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I finally grabbed this off of my bookshelf. I had tried reading Invisible Monsters and Afterland, but they did not grab me like I had hoped. This novel was a nice, quick reminder of what makes this author one to watch.
While the plot is fairly straightforward with a lot of exposition shoved into the last 2-3 chapters, there are descriptive moments of laugh out loud brilliance in the way she describes the emotions of her characters. The way the culture and street slang of South Africa is incorporated into conversation is accessible, contextual, and easy to follow. There are some creative interstitial chapters that do much to round out the world-building.
I found the larger theme (carrying around the baggage of your past) to be interesting, maybe a little ham fisted. The impact of this theme on the main character’s development is almost moot by the end, though it keeps you reading as bits of the past are revealed, still leaving a large chunk for you to fill in on your own.
All said, The book is a quick and steady read. Easy enough to put down when needed and just as easy to pick back up.”
