A powerful and taut novel about racial tensions in Los Angeles, following two families—one Korean-American, one African-American—grappling with the effects of a decades-old crime

In the wake of the police shooting of a black teenager, Los Angeles is as tense as it’s been since the unrest of the early 1990s. But Grace Park and Shawn Matthews have their own problems. Grace is sheltered and largely oblivious, living in the Valley with her Korean-immigrant parents, working long hours at the family pharmacy. She’s distraught that her sister hasn’t spoken to their mother in two years, for reasons beyond Grace’s understanding. Shawn has already had enough of politics and protest after an act of violence shattered his family years ago. He just wants to be left alone to enjoy his quiet life in Palmdale.

But when another shocking crime hits LA, both the Park and Matthews families are forced to face down their history while navigating the tumult of a city on the brink of more violence.

“This work of historical fiction tells a fictional story created by the families impacted by the liquor store killing of a young Black teenage girl at the hands of a Korean convenience store owner in LA in the early 1990s. The story creates an environment that shows how the families and family members were impacted some 25 years later. The juxtaposition of the families in South LA to their new homes elsewhere demonstrates not only how the uprising affected families then but how it rearranged the region. Some of the choices in the third act are a little predictable but overall, it’s a very engaging book.”
“Read for class but it’s an interesting examination of racism between a black family and a Korean family. Unclear villain and it shows that racism and justice is not black and white at all”
Thinking Face“Where do I START!! As a Korean-American, I felt appalled by the actions of Grace and her parents. I felt horrible for what happened to Grace’s mom but understood it. I understand it was a tumultuous time that was perpetrated by those in power without the Korean or Black community’s consent. I felt so much anger toward both main characters at some points and realized it was all a defense mechanism to shield themselves. I don’t know. I need to sit with this one. Wow.”
