“This is my Book Club pick this month. I started out being optimistic but after the first few short stories, I began to get quite irritated by the abrupt ending of some of the stories. They left wondering what's happening and without a satisfying closure or hint of a closure, I did not finish the whole book. However, after my Book Club discussion of the book, and with the benefit of hearing a member (an Indian lady) explain some of the cultural nuances and possibly translation challenges, I began to appreciate this book better. Given this I feel the book could have been better handled to cater to a wider audience who may not have benefit of exposure to Indian culture. Still, I must give credit to the writer and the translators for making this attempt to bring Tamil literature to non-Tamil-speaking readers. I hope for more of such efforts so that we get to appreciate the diverse cultures in Singapore.”
