Emmett Till took a train from his home in Chicago to visit family in Money, Mississippi; a few weeks later he returned home dead. “Nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award for General Nonfiction.
On one level, this books tells about Wideman’s investigation into the death of Emmett Till’s father, Louis, who was executed by the U.S. Army for allegedly murdering one woman and raping two others in Italy toward the end of World War II. On another level, it’s a jazz-like meditation on racism, what Wideman calls “the American darkness in which sons and fathers lose track of one another.”
The jazz-like improv includes riffs on many topics, including his own absent father, Ezra Pound (who was apparently in the same prison as Louis Till), slavery, the nature of truth, his own youth, the savant who worked for the neighborhood barber, his trip to his family’s South Carolina home place, his trip to France to see Louis Till’s grave.
Wideman – the recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant, a professor at Brown University, and the first writer to win the International PEN/Faulkner Award twice – mixes fact, fiction, and speculation, possibly beyond the comfort level of some readers. The writing is quite good, brilliant in places, but also sometimes difficult and cryptic.
I read the book just days after Emmett Till’s accuser, Carolyn Bryant Donham, had admitted that Till did not proposition or touch or flirt with her, as she had claimed in the 1955 trial of Till’s killers. Interestingly, during the trial of Emmett Till’s killers, his father’s confidential military record was declassified and leaked to the press as a way of raising doubts about the Tills’ innocence, a point that Wideman makes.”
