Publisher Description
As the battle against the Empire rages, a new crew of X-wing fighters risk life and machine on a daring undercover mission and emerge as the Rebel Alliance’s elite strike force.
It is Wedge Antilles’s boldest creation: a covert-action unit of X-wing fighters, its pilots drawn from the dregs of other units, castoffs and rejects being given one last chance. But before the new pilots can complete their training, the squadron’s base is attacked by former Imperial admiral Trigit and Wraith Squadron is forced to swing into action—taking over an Imperial warship and impersonating its crew.
The mission: to gain vital intelligence about Trigit’s secret weapons, to sabotage the admiral’s plans, and to lure him into an Alliance trap. However, the high-stakes gamble pits Wraith Squadron’s ragtag renegades against the Empire’s most brilliant master of guile and deception.
Are they up to the challenge?
If not, the penalty is instant death.

“Wraith Squadron (Star Wars: X Wing #5) by Aaron Allston:
Book five of the fabled X Wing series begins a new trilogy with a new author. This is book one of Wraith Squadron and was written by Aaron Allston (RIP, died way too young). My research has shown this and the two that follow it the most popular books in the series, as most feel that Allston is a better writer all around. I would agree with that, I think this is much better written story with more detailed characters. I liked this cast better for the most part and I also appreciate Allston's humor, he provides a good balance of comedy and tragedy.
The cast of characters if an ensemble of misfits, all of whom have specific peculiarities and flaws. I also liked how this book was not just "Top Gun meets Star Wars" and had quite a bit of the plot on the ground. I think that the plot wasn't quite as exciting as earlier books in the series, but then again, this is just the beginning of a trilogy.
I gave this four out of five stars, but please that that rating is contextualized to Star Wars. Most Star Wars books are mediocre and very few are great, but I still enjoy them for the escapism and fun.”
