Words of Radiance

By Brandon Sanderson
Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, Words of Radiance, Book Two of the Stormlight Archive, continues the immersive fantasy epic that The Way of Kings began.

Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.

The Assassin, Szeth, is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.

Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.

Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable.

“I'm not sure whether I like this more or less than the way of kings but regardless it was phenomenal. The writing again has this weird thing where everything is foreshadowed and hints are dropped as to what's gonna happen but when it actually does it's still a surprise. It still has that last 200 pages where everything is just crammed in and your just getting lore and action shoved down your throat so you can't stop reading, but that's what makes it so much fun. I don't normally get fully immersed into books but I find it happening again and again with the stormlight series. My one main complaint is again Shallan. I feel like she just went through the same journey as the first book where as everyone else mostly Kaladin and Dalinar built on the last book. I guess an argument could be made that it was done so she could kinda mirror Adolin and his growth as a character but hes had a more direct growth from being a child to a man I find, where as Shallan felt like a woman at the end of the last book and then went back to being a child and then a woman again in this book. Funnily enough just like the last book after her whole growth and journey is finished she's become one of my favourite characters. I just want her to stay as one of my favourite 😭😭 lol. Kaladin still feels like a little bit like a edgy teenager but like thats his getup so I can't even complain. Dalinar tho that man's perfect I needed more chapters from his pov, that man can do no wrong. There weren't many deaths in this book which surprised me cause the whole time it kinda had the feel of a transition from small game villians to like end game villains. Sadeas death I saw coming and actually loved how it was done being so quick and almost felt like a side death. It kinda fit with the growth of the characters and how his petty anger and squabbling is below them, they now have real issues to deal with in the world and just needed him out of the way. Plus we all know he wanted some elaborate grand death but a hallway tussle is exactly what he deserved. Great book, I think I'll get to the novella before continuing with these giant bricks but I expect to get to the next book soon.”
Smiling Face with Heart-Eyes“I loved it! I grew to love characters such as Shallan and Adolin where before I didn’t feel much for them. The interludes are not my favorites 😭. Just when you are fully immersed in the story, the interludes come along. Kind of takes me out of it. But I pushed through. Brandon Sanderson didn’t disappoint. I loved the progression and it isn’t too “Game of Thrones”. Brandon continues doesn’t just kill off characters we like and then nothing happens. Hahahaha. So the ending was really satisfying. Can’t wait to get to Oathbringer.”
