“Winterfrost Market:
Author: Jenny Sandiford
"When in doubt, make tea. That's what her mother always said, and it had never let her down yet."
This was a book club read with my book club: The Tales of the Wizard.
I had never read a cozy fantasy before. Because of this, I was really looking forward to starting this book.
We meet Elsie, who runs a traveling teahouse with her mother and sister.
One day, Elsie's mother decides to leave for Midwinter Haven. This is a land located in the north of the world.
The wildest rumors are circulating about Midwinter Haven. People claim that elves, fae, and other mythical creatures live there.
When her mother still hasn't returned after more than a month, Elsie decides to travel to Midwinter Haven to search for her.
Traveling to a strange land brings with it its fair share of dangers. Elsie decides to appoint Kit as her traveling companion.
Kit is a tracker with a rather mysterious past. Slowly but surely, a romance is bubbling up between the duo, but is Kit actually the person he claims to be, or is he on the run from something himself?
Midwinter Haven is bursting with magic, but the land is ruled by a corrupt monarchy that turns out to be closely connected to the disappearance of Elsie's mother...
While reading, I became completely absorbed in the magical world of Midwinter Haven. The author has a vivid writing style that gives the reader the feeling of disappearing completely into her world.
Even the scents of tea and the sounds of the market are described. A nice detail was that the author herself came up with herbal and fae dishes. This created sparks of originality here and there.
I am really looking forward to reading Jenny Sandiford's other works.
