“Made me smell my home.
The environment of Montana described by Welch is a love letter to the state—a love letter withstanding tear stains smudging ink. The alfalfa is overgrown, homesteads in disrepair—bleached with rain and sun, mosquitos buzz until slapped. Welch’s palette consists of mud, summer rain, and mating season musk. Our central character is all of the above in the body of the crest fallen Native. He knew greatness was a part of his cultural narrative. Stripped from him and his people by the world of “stalking white men,” he has fallen into debauchery and senseless coping.
An ode to Montana yesterday, today, and tomorrow. For everybody who has cried in the wilderness therein with the feeling of our state’s tragic history and present weighing heavy. Homesick even in spite of this all.”

About James Welch
James Welch was the author of the novels Winter in the Blood, Fools Crow, for which he received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, an American Book Award, and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, The Indian Lawyer, The Death of Jim Loney, and Killing Custer: The Battle of the Little Bighorn and the Fate of the Plains Indians. He attended schools on the Blackfeet and Fort Belknap reservations in Montana, graduated from the University of Montana, where he studied writing with the late Richard Hugo, and served on the Montana State Board of Pardons.
Bestselling author Louise Erdrich grew up in North Dakota and is of German and Turtle Mountain Chippewa descent. Her novels include Love Medicine and The Beet Queen.
