Wind/Pinball
ByPublisher Description
NATIONAL BESTSELLER
Wind/Pinball, a unique two-in-one volume, includes, on one side, Murakami’s first novel Hear the Wind Sing. When you flip the book over, you can read his second novel, Pinball, 1973. Each book has its own stunning cover.
In the spring of 1978, a young Haruki Murakami sat down at his kitchen table and began to write. The result: two remarkable short novels—Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973—that launched the career of one of the most acclaimed authors of our time.
These powerful, at times surreal, works about two young men coming of age—the unnamed narrator and his friend the Rat—are stories of loneliness, obsession, and eroticism. They bear all the hallmarks of Murakami’s later books, and form the first two-thirds, with A Wild Sheep Chase, of the trilogy of the Rat.
Widely available in English for the first time ever, newly translated, and featuring a new introduction by Murakami himself, Wind/Pinball gives us a fascinating insight into a great writer’s beginnings.

“Reading the very first book(s) Murakami wrote was genuinely an eye opening experience after having read several of his later works. The Author's Note from Murakami provided important insight that made SO MUCH sense. I've always loved Murakami's writing because of how straightforward and simple is. Turns out Murakami wrote in English first and then translated the work into Japanese. The reverse translation helped simplify his writing and create a tone that is very distinctly Murakami: detached melancholic nostalgia without a conscious awareness of why. Definitely preferred Hear the Wind Sing because of the beautiful prose and experimental narration but Pinball had a beautifully different but very realistic take on grief and the stagnation that comes with it. Knowing this was Murakami's very first book made me hyperaware of all the themes and metaphors that later followed in his subsequent novels. It was a genuine treat to experience all the common symbolism and stylistic choices Murakami makes in his very first book. One can say he tried different pathways in other books but I'd say he stayed consistent and this book proves it. While this book does feel a bit rough compared to his other popular books, I'd say this book has the raw essence of Murakami that made me venture in Murakami's work in the first place. A detached surreal perspective on what it means to be alive and present in a world where it feels like time is passing you by, no matter what you do.”

“This is my first experience with Murakami. I enjoyed the writing style these stories a lot. It took getting used to, but the way it jumps around actually made me invested to see what would happen next. In plot, there’s not much there, but it works somehow. I liked Pinball more than Wind, but both are enjoyable. I’ll definitely finish the Rat trilogy at some point”
