★ "Fans of A Series of Unfortunate Events will be in heaven."―Kirkus Reviews, starred review
Before the Baudelaires became orphans, before he encountered A Series of Unfortunate Events, even before the invention of Netflix, Lemony Snicket was a boy discovering the mysteries of the world. This is his story.
In a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted, a young Lemony Snicket began his apprenticeship in an organization nobody knows about. He started by asking questions that shouldn't have been on his mind. Now he has written an account that shouldn’t be published, in four volumes that shouldn't be read.
This is the first volume.
The mystery continues in When Did You See Her Last?, Shouldn’t You Be in School?, and Why Is This Night Different from All Other Nights?, all available now.

“After rewatching the A Series of Unfortunate Events tv series (2017) and wanting more without rereading the series again, I came across Lemony Snicket’s origin story! I can’t believe I haven’t heard of it before.
It’s very, very charming.
Like communicating with your associates via library book holds and referencing various well-known books.
Fans of the ASoUE tv show will find they know some characters present in this story!

”They say in every library there is a single book that can answer the question that burns like a fire in the mind."
"Do you know how to pick a lock?"
"Not really," I said. "I received a grade of Incomplete. I know how to throw a rock through a window."
"Everyone knows how to throw a rock through a window," she said.
"I meant to tell you," I said. "My deafness was cured by a treatment of root beer, so you don't have to shout at me." “Get out!" she continued to shout, and I got out.
"Sounds like a wild ride to me,' Pip said, starting the engine. “Speaking of wild rides, if you haven't read The Wind in the Willows, you really should," I told them.
"I'm reminded of a book my father used to read me,' she said. "A bunch of elves and things get into a huge war over a piece of jewelry that everybody wants but nobody can wear. “I never liked that kind of book," I replied. "There's always a wizard who's very powerful but not very helpful."”
