“I haven't read that much of Snow White's retellings, but this dark iteration on the story was a new experience and I liked it.
Tanith Lee takes the fairytale of Snow White and mixes it a bit with the myth of Hades and Persephone and gives us a story that has the main players of the original Snow White: a dark queen, a mysterious mirror, seven dwarfs, a princess with alabaster hite skin and hair dark like the night, and a glass coffin.
We see constant clash between the old religion and Christianity, the cruelty of men and the struggle of women in this universe (there was too much rape to be honest), and my favorite thing is the shifting perspective between the dark queen and the princess, and what that really means of their relationship.
It had the right amount of changes to keep me on my toes and offer a fresh reading experience while also hitting the main notes of the fairytale I know. It felt like reading a fever dream, and I'm defintely interested in reading more by Tanith Lee”
