Where I End

By Sophie White
Where I End by Sophie White digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Winner of the Shirley Jackson Award, a modern gothic horror where a young woman falls into a dark obsession after a new artist and her baby arrive on her small Irish island.

At night, my mother creaks. The house creaks along with her. Sometimes in the morning we find her in places. We never see her move. We just come upon her.
Aoileann is cursed. She has no friends, never gone to school. She has never left this windswept craggy isle off the coast of Ireland.

Her mother is cursed: a silent wreck Aoileann calls the “bed-thing.” Alongside her grandmother, Aoileann’s days are an endless monotony of feeding, changing, and caring for the bed-thing.

Their island seems cursed, whispering secrets only Aoileann hears. Then Rachel, a vivacious artist from the mainland, arrives with her colicky newborn. Rachel arouses yearnings Aoileann cannot fully comprehend. Soon, the unfolding of her mother’s secret tragedy and Aoileann’s pursuit of her own dark desires are both destined to unleash a maelstrom upon all three of their lives.

Described by New York Times–bestselling author John Connolly as “perhaps the finest Irish horror novel of the 21st century,” Where I End is a modern Irish gothic that will pull readers into its undertow of family resentments and relentless obsession.

“This one definitely fits in with being “weird girl horror”. This just happens to be my favorite sub genre of horror. The imagery and plot flow was excellent and almost a little too in depth and realistic (if you know, you know 🤢). The characters were mostly one dimensional except for our FMC which I think strengthened her complicated and sometime awkward existence. Her character qualities unfold throughout the book until she becomes fully cringe but somehow you still feel some empathy and sympathy for her and her situation. It’s a great back and forth with how you feel about Aoileann, it makes you uncomfortable and I love books that succeed at this. I will say, the ending really fell flat and almost felt rushed to me. It really took away from the build and growth of the plot. It left me wanting more and it felt amateur compared to the rest of the writing and that really affected how much I enjoyed the book as a whole. Overall, weird girl book that you should at least check out if you like that sort of thing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.25”
“Wow this was depressing and hella disturbing, but I liked it! Very dark and sad, but the last quarter was kinda wild in a quiet way. I haven’t read anything like this before and the peek at Irish lore and culture was cool.”
