Marilynne Robinson has built a sterling reputation as a writer of sharp, subtly moving prose, not only as a major American novelist, but also as a rigorous thinker and incisive essayist.

In When I Was a Child I Read Books she returns to and expands upon the themes which have preoccupied her work with renewed vigor.

In "Austerity as Ideology," she tackles the global debt crisis, and the charged political and social political climate in this country that makes finding a solution to our financial troubles so challenging. In "Open Thy Hand Wide" she searches out the deeply embedded role of generosity in Christian faith. And in "When I Was a Child," one of her most personal essays to date, an account of her childhood in Idaho becomes an exploration of individualism and the myth of the American West. Clear-eyed and forceful as ever, Robinson demonstrates once again why she is regarded as one of our essential writers.

“Let me just get out of the way that this is NOT the author for me, she rubs me the wrong way and I didn’t enjoy this collection, lol. I picked this up because her fiction wasn’t something I enjoyed, but her writing and her intellect interested me. I thought, sincerely believed, that non-fiction was the way to go and that, finally, I could have that connection to her work that others seem to enjoy. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happened. Many times, I agreed with statements she made, and genuinely found the juxtaposition of intellectualism and devotion to her faith fascinating. It’s something that I’m interested in understanding better. But, overall, I found that while she is comfortable being critical of others she seems to have a substantial blindspot in her own statements. I think this blindspot comes from her own privilege. It’s surely reflected in the work which, despite mentions of marginalized experiences, is quite western, white, and financially comfortable. The writing is challenging at times, but I found it to be unnecessarily so. Allowing that it is simply her voice, I’d add that just because something is passionately and intelligently delivered doesn’t mean it is valuable. Undoubtedly, her opinions are valid — but a book of essays from her felt repetitive and lacked intersectionality or the self-criticism I would have liked. Clearly I am in the minority here, and people LOVE her work… but I’m calling it, for myself, and leaving it to the fans! Despite not loving this, and moving on from the author I am really happy that I decided to read this, it was important for me to understand my feelings about her work and to further hone my own reading taste.”
