“I think maybe I shouldn’t have seen this as holiday read. Obviously a translation but I found the prose dense and often impenetrable, having to re read a sentence several times before I got the meaning. The subject matter itself was fascinating. Roth is writing about a city he actually doesn’t much care for and about to enter a period of cataclysmic change. He writes about the city’s underbelly, the poor, the destitute and the disadvantaged. The pieces I found most interesting were those on Berlin’s Jewish population at the time of which Roth was one.”
