“The first part of the book had some dialogue exposition that felt overly didactic, but that fades. Fortunately, it becomes an enthralling read over time. Yes, I learned about Kenya's colonial plight, but more than that, the author made me feel it, just heartbreaking.”

“Fascinating. At first I didn’t like the prose but it grew on me, as did the characters. Felt more and more furious with every page. Such an insightful and bitter read. Saves the mule kick for last.”

About Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (1938–2025) was an award-winning novelist, playwright, and essayist from Kenya whose novels have been translated into more than thirty languages. In addition to Weep Not, Child, his novels A Grain of Wheat, Petals of Blood, The River Between, and Devil on the Cross are available from Penguin Classics.
Ben Okri (introduction) won the Booker Prize in 1991 for his novel The Famished Road. He was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and lives in London.
