MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS AHEAD. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
I became very concerned as I started reading this story, and that concern continued on until I got to the wedding/honeymoon scenes then I felt better and even relieved that this story finally was heading into the right direction, however once the honeymoon scenes ended it just dropped right off and straight on off again, which again caused great concern within me again.
First off all, I thought the premise behind the story was good, and I thought it would be very promising with the backstory between Draco and Allegra, the relationship between Allegra and her father, and just a lot of ideas that I would thought would make it a very angsty read, which I was very much looking forward to. I have no qualms about the setup of the story with its atypical Presents plot of father’s business not doing well so made a deal with the hero to save said business in return for daughter’s hand in marriage only daughter hated hero ever since hero rejected her cruelly so many years ago, but was still attracted to said hero. Nothing unique or new behind that premise, but I was okay with of it because of what I expected to come which was an intense, emotional and really angsty read.
However execution didn’t go so well in my opinion for me. The reason being that it was very intense, almost too intense, and it wasn’t of the emotional variety but the physical variety. I think if it was the emotional type I wouldn’t have mind it as much, but it was the intense physical chemistry and attraction between Draco and Allegra that felt way too much. There was just entirely too much focus on that side of their relationship that just overwhelmed the entire plot of the story. It even took away from the emotional side of the story as well because there was just so much sexual tension there it was hard to get past that. Yes, they were butting heads and winding each other up along the way, but it came across too lusty instead of having a balance between their attraction to each other and their emotions for one another, which weren’t certainly there but hidden behind all that lust. It just felt like an abundance when I don’t think it was meant to be. I think it was meant to be this sexy cat and mouse game, but I just overwhelmed by it all because of the intensity that was their attraction for one another. It was about lust more than anything.
Plus as they were dancing around each other they kept repeating things along the way like “I”m not in love with him” when she clearly was, and there the phrase “Oh, I’m not going to fall in love with him” when again Allegra clearly was and for many, many years, and then there was the other one of “He’s never going to fall in love with me so I can’t fall in love with him” again she was beyond that point. I get she was trying to deny that she had feelings for him as deep as she did, but it got a little tiresome after awhile especially when she said it over and over again and multiple times in the book. It got just a little much. And if that wasn’t bad enough he repeated the same thing over and over again too like “I’m not in love with her” or “I can’t love her”, and stuff that nature. So it came from both sides of the coin and both of them said over and over again that it just got to be too much and felt like it was in way more int the story than needed to be. They needed to focus on other things aside from that.
But finally the story got better when they married and later went on their honeymoon because this was the first time that there was more of a balance between the emotional and physical part of their relationship occurred. This was when some of the most beautiful moments happened between them. There were really tender moments. There were vulnerable moments. There were revealing moments as they talked about their past and their hurts along the way. It was finally where they opened up to one another and that was really beautiful to see. I really liked seeing them bond and get closer to one another. Plus it really diluted the intense attraction and lust between them from the beginning where it got a little too much and overwhelming at times. That balanced really was needed in this story and was what I enjoyed about this book.
Yet another thing I adored was that first time scene between Allegra and Draco. It was so beautiful, so tender, so sweet, and just really lovely. This was scene full of caring, love and respect between the two of them that it was hard not to aww at it. I think this was the first love scene that I have read that even talked about needing respect and caring in the moment and then beautifully showing just that in the scene between them. It’s really what should be between two people at that very special moment, and that was what exactly what it was for Allegra and Draco in that moment. I really appreciated the fact that respect was mentioned by Draco in that moment and showing it accordingly. Usually respect is implied in love scenes but in this one it was very outright and expressed perfectly well, which made them love scene even more beautiful between them. I loved that moment. I felt that within my heart of hearts that it truly was a moment of respect, caring and connection as the two of them came together. I loved how gentle and patient he was with her. I loved how reassuring he was in that moment as she battled some insecurities within herself at that moment. I just loved that it showed that it was about them as a couple, instead of the two them just slaking their lust for one another. It was always more between them, and in that moment both realized it. The scene was just done in very classy, tasteful, and respectful way, and I thought that was absolutely brilliant. Now that wasn’t say their first time wasn’t hot and steamy because it was there was just more to it that because of how it was written and portrayed with that respect piece of the puzzle. I loved that.
Same could be said the next love scene as well. It was very clear that there was a lot of love and respect between them as well as lot of passion and heat between them. I loved seeing the balance between those things to make it a really complete love scene. It also showed off how much an emotional connection as well as a physical connection that they had to one another. That was really special I thought. It was always more between them than just the physical.
I also really adored the moments where they would open up to one another and become as emotional intimate with each other as they did physically. I loved hw they really could open up to one another and just be themselves. They talked about the past. They talked about the relationship with their families. They talked about the past with one another as well as their hurt feelings along the way. They talked about her insecurities. Just a whole lot of stuff. Yes, it was done sometimes during the aftermath of their lovemaking, but it was there and very sincere and genuine and brought them closer together as they began to understand each other more and more. The closer they got. The deeper they fell for one another. I just really liked seeing them spend time together and have that intimacy built between them. Those were the beautiful moments. I wish there were more of those moments than all that focus on the physical attraction to one another and denying it as much as they did when doth protested too much. Anyway I just loved the honeymoon scenes so much.
Once they got home from their honeymoon though it quickly went downhill for me. As soon as the plane landed, Allegra and Draco were off in different directions due to work obligations, and then really didn’t spend anytime together execute when they broke up and then when they reconciled. That was it. I was expecting there to be a little more of them interaction once they did finally hit the real world, but there was none. Instead a lot of the focus was inside of their own heads of why the couldn’t love the other person or why they couldn’t be with the other person without love, etc. It was a lot telling and less showing. I did like that he did send her flowers and such to show he was thinking about her, but I would have preferred them spending more time together on the page at the point whether it was a date night or just outing as a couple whether it be business or not. Something else besides what did occur.
Then it seemed like their points of view did a one eighty degree within a blink of an eye. It was just quick that it made head spin a little bit because of how abrupt the change was. Now I believed that they were both in love with each other and that they had been for sometime just never confronted it head on before this. I knew wanted to be together and have a real marriage and such. There was never a question in my mind of that. It was the abruptness of the change that just took me aback. These two were just so stubborn for so long of what they believed they wanted that I thought it would take more than what happened in the book before they acknowledged feelings between them as well that they in fact wanted a real marriage with one another. It just felt rushed, and there needed to be a little bit more build up there. There just needed to be something more there for me then that.
Because of that abruptness that happened it made the ending a little anticlimactic as well and just kind of ended suddenly. Again there needed to be something more. Even if there was an epilogue there, I think that would have helped a bit and counteract the abruptness of them deciding they wanted to be together forever after all. The epilogue could have included of them having children or her relationship or non relationship with her father or just showing them happy together in complete and utter bliss. Just something that would have made the story feel more complete. Something was missing from the ending.
Another thing I was disappointed that wasn’t in the story was a scene between Allegra and father whether it be a positive interaction or a negative one I wouldn’t have cared but there needed to be a confrontation scene I think. Just a scene where Allegra put it all out there for her father so he knew all of the emotional baggage that he left her with during her childhood and how it affected her as an adult. Again it could have been a scene where it was a positive one where they could have rebuilt their relationship and start anew or it could be a negative one where she would tell him off after he made clear that he really didn’t want a relationship with her after all. It would have just shown off her strength I think and also made her realize she didn’t need her father’s love anymore or that she wasn’t going chase it anymore because it was nothing that was wrong with her or what she was lacking. It was wrong with her father that he couldn’t give her the loved that she so deserved. It would have been a huge moment for Allegra to finally stand up to him after all this time and say her peace. It would have been great development and growth for her especially since that was such a big part of the plot and was the reason for her agreeing to marry Draco in the first place. I just wish it was included in the story.
This book was an iffy one to me. The beginning and the ending didn’t really do it for me while the middle was absolutely brilliant and beautiful that it almost made up what I didn’t like in the bookends of the story. They honeymoon was amazing. The love scenes were amazing. A big reason being because there was such a nice balance between the emotional and physical side of their relationship that made really root them as a couple. I enjoyed seeing them as a couple, and I wanted to see more of that side of their story than anything else. The beginning was just too intense with the lust that it just took over what could have really been a beautiful love story between Allegra and Draco. There was just too much focus there and overwhelmed at times, and it seemed like that was all that they had going for them even know I knew there were feelings involved as well. It wasn’t as fun as I was expecting as they fought their attraction to another. They butted head for sure and tried to one up one another but again it just had too much intensity and lust behind instead of playfulness and intense emotions along with that. There just wasn’t enough of balance there. There needed to be more push and pull on the emotional side of the story as well as the physical instead of just the physical side. It wasn’t as angsty as I was hoping it to be especially with the complicated backstory they had between them, but that lust factor just really took over the story in my opinion, and there was not a lot a room for much else. I was expecting a lot more longing going on for both of them. I wasn’t expecting the ending to be so abrupt. I thought would be a confrontation with the father. Just something more to the story from beginning, middle and end. The middle was the heart and soul of the story, and I loved that. It just didn’t carry through to the ending like I thought it was going to, redeeming the first half of the story. I would have forgiven the beginning if there was an awesome middle and ending. The middle was while the ending was not.
This was not my favorite Melanie Milburne book, but it wasn’t the worst romance I have ever read either. It just wasn’t my favorite.”
