“Many of Files' works, both novels and short stories, have either been set in or attached to a weird, off-kilter, sometimes absolutely horrifying version of Toronto, Canada. This collection of short pieces really explores the nature and historical origins of that Toronto. It weaves together various supernatural traditions and numerous ethnic identities through a recurring cast of characters (many of whom have either appeared in or have their personal origin stories in other of the author's works) evolving through an initially disconnected set of narratives, which end up rather satisfyingly united. It's a group of deeply creepy stories with more than a tiny tang of Lovecraft to them - among other influences (Jackson, Matheson). I really savored this one.”
About Gemma Files
Gemma Files, a former film critic, journalist, screenwriter, and teacher, has been an award-winning horror author since 1999. She has published two collections of short work; two chapbooks of speculative poetry; the “weird western” Hexslinger Series; a story-cycle; and the standalone novel
, which won the 2016 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel and the 2016 Sunburst Award for Best Adult Novel. Files also has several story collections and a collection of poetry forthcoming.
