"A spellbinding tale filled with deception, political intrigue, and atmosphere that lives and breathes—I am obsessed with this story." —Kerri Maniscalco, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, New York Times bestselling author Hafsah Faizal's We Hunt the Flame—first in the Sands of Arawiya duology—is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands.

People lived because she killed. People died because he lived.

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

We Hunt the Flame Reviews

3.5
“I was deceived 🧍‍♀️. The story began okay-ish, then it picked up 40% in and went downhill from there. The amount of times the characters go “skies” or “sweet snow below” or “rimaal” made me go NUTS. Also, sometimes the author would put Arabic vocabs in sentences they don’t belong/adding Arabic vocabs for the sake of putting them. eg: “She had never seen a falcon before. She had never experienced true Arawiya at all, khalas.” “Khalas” here makes no sense, and that’s just one example. And this is something i would usually pass if the book was to my standards, but it feels worth mentioning here since it isn’t; some things felt veryyyy over the top. I can’t provide examples right now but a lot of the time things sounded very cringe. Also, 60% into the book, I felt the characters lacked depth even as the story progressed, sure there was progression but it was very surface level. And as well as the “Arz” and “Sharr” somehow it was the main thing the characters spoke about, and yet it also felt very surface level. Something always felt missing and it became hard to keep going. This is a personal preference, but I despised the way almost every chapter started with the characters’ names. Also i heard many people say something along the lines of “amazing yearning”, sure there was yearning, but frankly, was dumb. I hated every part of that yearning, because miss girl falls in love with the person who’s known to be an assassin and hAD killed presumably her second best friend BASED OFF LOOKS ALONE????? You might say “oh but she fell in love with his personality” BRO BARELY SHOWED ANYTHING, JUST BECAUSE HE SPOKE GENTLY???? GTFOOOOO IM SO PISSED. Anyway, then 80% in i discovered the author is of “arab descent”, and as an arab born and raised, i’m sorry but it shows. I am giving the story a 3 stars though because i got inspired by the writing at the beginning, and i enjoyed the setting, AND MAINLY FOR ALTAIR, BRO WAS SO GOATED HE CARRIED THE BOOK.”
“Loved it! The plot twists were plot twisting. Was a little slow in the beginning, but the second half made up for it. Very different from what I read usually. Enjoyed it!”
