Publisher Description

D-503 is the Builder of the Integral, the United State’s first spaceship. A life of calculations and equations in the United State leaves little room for emotional expression outside of the pink slips that give one private time with another Number. The façade however starts to crack when I-330, a mysterious she-Number with a penchant for the Ancients, enters the picture.

We, Yevgeny Zamyatin’s fourth novel, was written in 1920–21, but remained unpublished until its English release in 1924 due to conditions in the Soviet Union at the time (it was eventually published there in 1988). Its dystopian future setting predates Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World, and it’s now considered a founding member of the genre. It has been translated into English and other languages many times; presented here is the original 1924 translation by Gregory Zilboorg.

“I think I share the sentiment with other readers that I wish I knew about this book before I read Orwell’s 1984. This is a short book but very dense. It took a while to finish. I think it was written way ahead of its time. Russian literature is tough but well worth the read for the first dystopian book of its time. ETA: I finished this book late at night so my initial review felt off/half-assed. Living in a dystopian society where you are being 100% controlled is not good. There is no room for free will, no individualism to explore, but with the introduction of I330, I felt that D503 was worse off with the rebel mindset playing and toying with him. I saw her as manipulative and that he was better off living without his emotions or imagination. With her around and being aware of his “biological soul”, I felt that he was tormented. I took him as someone having an emotional disturbance, anxiety, and being very jealous. So it makes you wonder that yea, this totalitarian state was no good but it wasn’t that bad when he was pretty much okay before she came around. Her character reminded me of the guerrilla leader in My Tender Matador. In this novel, you are either forced to choose between a painful freedom or a peaceful submission.”

About Yevgeny Zamyatin

Yevgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin (Russian: Евге́ний Ива́нович Замя́тин, 20 January (Julian) / 1 February (Gregorian), 1884 – 10 March 1937), sometimes anglicized as Eugene Zamyatin, was a Russian author of science fiction, philosophy, literary criticism, and political satire.

Despite being the son of a Russian Orthodox priest, Zamyatin lost his faith in Christianity at an early age and became a Bolshevik. As a member of his Party's Pre-Revolutionary underground, Zamyatin was repeatedly arrested, beaten, imprisoned, and exiled. However, Zamyatin was just as deeply disturbed by the policies pursued by the All-Union Communist Party (b) (VKP (b) following the October Revolution as he had been by the Tsarist policy of Orthodoxy, Autocracy, and Nationality.
