We

By Yevgeny Zamyatin & Gregory Zilboorg
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin & Gregory Zilboorg digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

This classic Russian dystopian novel inspired George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, and many other science fiction writers, and now this reprint of the original 1924 translation of We is available from Dover. Set in a future under a unified totalitarian state, in a society ruled by conformity and where humans are identified by their assigned number, spaceship engineer D-503 must face his beliefs about the One Party head-on after a chance encounter with the beautiful and dissident I-330. It’s a page-turning adventure that has a home on any science fiction fan’s bookshelf.

“I feel like I would have loved this if I read it when I was in high school. Unfortunately, I no longer am, and I thought it was just fine. It's not really fair to this book that I have already read Brave New World and 1984, both of which came out after and were likely inspired by We, but many of the same ideas here so not have the same impact on me reading them now. Still, the gaslighting dystopian regime here is interesting to explore and it is pretty short and fast paced. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the actor Toby Jones, which I think enhanced the experience greatly.”
“An earlier 1984-style dystopian story with sci-fi and anti-religious elements.”
