We Are Water

By Wally Lamb
We Are Water by Wally Lamb digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“A mesmerizing novel about a family in crisis.”— Miami Herald

A disquieting and ultimately uplifting novel about a marriage, a family, and human resilience in the face of tragedy, from Wally Lamb, the New York Times bestselling author of The Hour I First Believed and I Know This Much Is True.

After 27 years of marriage and three children, Anna Oh—wife, mother, outsider artist—has fallen in love with Viveca, the wealthy Manhattan art dealer who orchestrated her success. They plan to wed in the Oh family’s hometown of Three Rivers in Connecticut. But the wedding provokes some very mixed reactions and opens a Pandora’s Box of toxic secrets—dark and painful truths that have festered below the surface of the Ohs’ lives.

We Are Water is a layered portrait of marriage, family, and the inexorable need for understanding and connection, told in the alternating voices of the Ohs—nonconformist, Anna; her ex-husband, Orion, a psychologist; Ariane, the do-gooder daughter, and her twin, Andrew, the rebellious only son; and free-spirited Marissa, the youngest. It is also a portrait of modern America, exploring issues of class, changing social mores, the legacy of racial violence, and the nature of creativity and art.

With humor and compassion, Wally Lamb brilliantly captures the essence of human experience and the ways in which we search for love and meaning in our lives.

Thinking Face“This book really makes you think about how abuse frames the way you function. From childhood, through adulthood, after having your own marriage and children. How it frames the way you work, what you believe, how you behave. Annie is abused by her cousin, Kent, and she physically abuses her only son, Andrew. Annie is short-tempered and secretive about her past, bottling it up and stuffing it down so she doesn’t have to relive the night of a flood that took the life of her mother and baby sister Gracie. Annie accidentally drops Gracie into the flood waters because she’s only 5 and Kent takes the blame for it. Later on, when Annie is being sexually abused by Kent, he says “I kept your secret and now you can keep OURS” “Ours”. So many abusers mention abuse as if it’s a shared thing, as if it’s not unwanted for the abusee. Annie spent the formative years of her life being sexually abused and forced to believe she had killed her sister. Kent preyed on that fear to make her more susceptible to his predatory nature. This is a thought provoking narrative of the trials a family go through, how secrets can destroy and how the power of family and trust prevail. TW⚠️‼️This book does contain Kent’s POV and disturbing details of pedophila from his prospective. It’s not overly detailed but it is uncomfortable. Please prioritize your mental health first Full TW I can remember: homophobia, sexual/physical abuse, murder, pedophilia (desired described by Kent), religious intolerance”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“The characters’ stories are what drove me. It was incredibly character driven, rather than strongly plot driven. The writing style kept me coming back, even during chapters that were fairly disturbing to get through. Satisfying comeuppance at the end.”
