ByPublisher Description
"Taut and elegant, carefully introspected and thoughtfully explored."—The New York Times
From Hugo award-winning author Sarah Pinsker comes a novel about one family and the technology that divides them.
Everybody's getting one.
Val and Julie just want what’s best for their kids, David and Sophie. So when teenage son David comes home one day asking for a Pilot, a new brain implant to help with school, they reluctantly agree. This is the future, after all.
Soon, Julie feels mounting pressure at work to get a Pilot to keep pace with her colleagues, leaving Val and Sophie part of the shrinking minority of people without the device.
Before long, the implications are clear, for the family and society: get a Pilot or get left behind. With government subsidies and no downside, why would anyone refuse? And how do you stop a technology once it's everywhere? Those are the questions Sophie and her anti-Pilot movement rise up to answer, even if it puts them up against the Pilot's powerful manufacturer and pits Sophie against the people she loves most.

“2.75/3⭐️{Kindle}
I like that this was a family drama SciFi mashup that was character driven on a family of four. I feel like this was a dip your toe in the water type sci-fi. Relatable. Felt like it was present day, just with cool technology. Not year 2175.
Technology that enhances how your brain functions. Imagine. Wouldn’t that be a lovely boost. Crossroads and everyone divided on whether you should or shouldn’t participate. Them vs Us. Created chaos socially.
What I didn’t like is the writing felt very disconnected and dispassionate to the point it got robotic. It was hard to connect with characters you felt were emotionless.”

“I'm really starting to love this author. She does a lot of thought-provoking what-if futuristic stories as some of my other favorites, like Scott Westerfeld and Neal Shusterman.
In a world where there's an option to upgrade to a more present, multitasking version of yourself, would you? And how many prejudices come with deciding against it? What about those that can't or won't alter their bodies because of disabilities or religion? In a family of four, two opt for and two deny the transplant, with mixed results.
Read by Bernadette Dunne. (Great narration, but would have liked four narrator voices since it's two moms, a daughter, and a son) #booksin25”
