Q: Do I have to buy the ebook to participate in a book club?

No, you don’t have to buy the ebook to participate, but we do recommend it to get the most out of your club. There are several premium social reading features that are only available when you buy the ebook, like annotations, reactions, comment threads, resources, discussion prompts, and more, all embedded right in the text. It’s a unique and immersive way to read.

Q: Why can’t I buy the ebook on the app?

It’s annoying, we know. App store rules prevent us from selling directly in the app, so for now you can only purchase ebooks on our website. Don’t worry: when you purchase an ebook on the web, it’s automatically added to your bookshelf in the app.

Q: How is Fable’s reader different from Kindle?

Kindle is a straightforward e-reader; Fable is an interactive e-reader that includes social features inside the ebooks. When you read an ebook on Fable, you can see and react to the text with others in real time. Start a discussion, share highlights and quotes, add emoji reactions—all of it lives right inside the book. It’s hard to explain and easy to see, so we recommend reading the free sample in one of our most active clubs to get a feel for it.

Q: Are book clubs free to join on Fable?

Most of our clubs are completely free to join. The only exceptions are clubs marked as “Premium” or “Career Development,” which do require a fee. You can find out more on each club’s detail page.

Q: How do I start a book club with this book on Fable?

“I got this book out of a bin at Walmart for 7 dollars. I've never read anything by Robert Jordan but I knew he was popular with the Wheel of time so I figured why not. Honestly I enjoyed the book a lot. Knowing it was his first novel made the experience better I think. There isn't the grand world building or super in depth character development. There's just a really good story to be enjoyed. Naturally it's sad because it leaves you wanting more knowing there will never be anything more to come.”

“I'm trying very hard to just review the book and not let my rating be influenced by my feelings for Jordan's Wheel of Time series, or the facts surrounding the writing of this book. Warrior of the Altaii was fine. I liked a lot of the ideas and the worldbuilding. It just didn't feel very polished. And I know this was his first book, and it was published after he died, and maybe he would have tidied some things up if it went to publishing while he was still alive. The pacing felt off; some parts dragged on so slowly, and other sections were resolved so quickly I hardly had time to feel anxious about what would happen. The character development was mediocre. The ending felt unfulfilling. I could definitely see how this could have been refined into a great book and even the start of a major series. (Unrelated but cool things I learned about this book: 1) He wrote it in 13 days! That's insanely impressive. Also validates my feelings that the ideas are there, they just needed to be polished more. 2) He met his wife because of this book. She was an editor and heard about this new author and left her contact info at this local bookstore he frequented so they could discuss his books. How's that for a meet cute?)”
