“I read this as part of Simon Haisell's year-long slow read over on Substack (Footnotes and Tangents) and I wasn't 100% sure I would actually get through the whole thing, but I decided to give it a go and I'm so glad I did. Having Simon's daily insights as well as the community chat every day kept me from getting too far behind, even with kids bringing home germs and my PDA/ADHD brain needing breaks now and then. There's a lot of zooming in and out between smaller moments and the larger picture, as well as going back and forth between the "war" and "peace" sections (which of course each turned out to be a mixture of both). I've heard some people skip the war parts, but I think that would be a mistake, personally, because they definitely add richness to the story. There are plenty of chapters where I got bored of Tolstoy's soapbox about war and leaders and such, but I also often found that I agreed with him about the point he was making and I appreciated that he just couldn't help himself. It was almost like he was his own character within the novel. If you're intimidated by it but want to give it a try, I definitely recommend the chapter-a-day slow-read method.”
