In the vein of The Stand (Stephen King) or Swan Song (Robert McCammon) we get the next great dystopian apocalypse book. This book spends it's whole time as the mysterious events unfold, this isn't a post apocalypse book. Society is cracking, humanity is dying and we get a front row seat. This book is 800+ pages, 32+ hours of audio, and I was engaged the whole time, never bored.
Chuck Wendig weaves science, religion, social media, music, politics, and human psychology together to tell this tale.
One day Shana's sister Nesse starts walking and doesn't respond to anything, she's joined by other "Sleepwalkers". Shana follows, along with family of other Sleepwalkers, they become "The Shepherds". If the Sleepwa kers are forcibly stopped, the explode. As this Flock moves across America fear and worry spread, what's causing this? A team of CDC investigators is there with them.
The religious right takes it as a sign from God. The white supremacists take it as a call to action. Wendig weaves in podcast, radio, and TV transcripts as well as Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr posts to give a view of what the rest of America is thinking.
As climate change hits the world is fighting back, and a new disease emerges. As it spreads through the world society starts to collapse. Are the Sleepwalkers the key to our survival as a species?
This was such an engaging book, I'm looking forward to starting it's sequel.”
