Vulcan's Forge Reviews

3.5
Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“A well crafted story that provides context to Spock’s decision to join Starfleet and to eventually become an ambassador trying to reunify the Vulcan and Romulan peoples. Newer Star Trek productions have tackled Spock’s formative years, but this still works as effective backstory. Seeing Uhura and McCoy and where there stories went after Star Trek 6 was interesting as well. As far as new characters, Spock’s childhood friend and fellow Starfleet captain David Rabin was a good foil without being a Kirk replacement. I will say that character’s heavy focus on his religion felt odd in a Star Trek novel. At times he felt as if he was plucked from the modern day instead of someone living centuries after (and beyond) today’s conflicts in the middle east. Overall a standout Star Trek novel and I’m excited to read the continuation.”
