Vortex

By Catherine Coulter
Vortex by Catherine Coulter digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

#1 New York Times bestselling Catherine Coulter returns with a brilliant new novel in her FBI thriller series, in which agents Sherlock and Savich find themselves dealing with very powerful figures from the past who could wreak havoc in the present.

Seven years ago, Mia Briscoe was at a college frat rave with her best friend, Serena, when a fire broke out. Everyone was accounted for except Serena, who was never seen nor heard from again. Now an investigative journalist covering the political scene in New York City, Mia discovers old photos taken the night of Serena’s disappearance and begins to uncover a sinister string of events going all the way back to that disastrous party. Working with Sherlock, the secrets begin to unravel. But some very powerful—and very dangerous—people will do anything to keep them from learning the truth.

CIA Operative Olivia Hildebrandt is a team leader on a mission in Iran to exfiltrate a betrayed undercover operative. She’s nearly killed by an exploding grenade and saved by a team member. But by the time Olivia is released from Walter Reed Hospital, that team member and a critical flash drive he was carrying have disappeared. When Olivia is attacked on her first night home, Savich suspects that the strike is a direct result of the compromised mission and the missing team member and flash drive. But what intelligence was at stake and who betrayed them?

“#2 in my “26 in 2026” for non-fantasy books that I need to get off my shelf. This is another book where I’m unsure why I even bought this. It’s pretty far into a series. Although, I don’t necessarily think I was missing any info. This book was not good. The plot was absurd. Olivia was the most oblivious CIA agent I’ve ever read. The treatment of classified info in this was ridiculous. The FBI/CIA “feud” was over the top on purpose. The FBI letting a reporter do what Mia did is nonsensical. When there’s a murder attempt, who the hell lets the victim run to a store???? From a safehouse?? Does that make sense?? There were also a lot of taking of hands/physical contact meant to comfort that I thought was awkward. The intro’s always had this weird part of “can I call you ___” which I have never heard anyone say in real life. It was something that I probably wouldn’t have cared about except it kept happening over and over. Just an awkward approach to conversation. In the beginning, I noticed most of the chapters weren’t dated, they just had times of year. Then there was “Present, 7 Years Ago” - what?? Those are mutually exclusive. Then it went on to talk about it the event happening way more recently… so it was just confusing as hell and I threw time out the window. There were two separate plots in this, and both had possibilities, but ultimately both left a lot to be desired.”
“felt bored, kept falling asleep while reading this one. I think I just wasn’t entertained.”
