“A beautiful book about a dark and scary time in American history”
“Eli Saslow extended massive grace to his fellow Americans by recording vast spectrum of perspectives. No one should feel isolated ideologically after reading this book. Tusdae Barr moved me deeply. I hope she has found stability since she saved more than $3,ooo.
I also empathized with Kaitlin Denis, a long COVID sufferer. The loss of stability to home and health bother me greatly about COVID-19. With long COVID, if the sufferer lacks a support system, they will be homeless. Long COVID impacts a person's neurological capacity. So someone could be without a home and not even know it.
I still wear a mask. I don't think I can call anything normal since COVID-19.”

About Eli Saslow
ELI SASLOW is a reporter for The New York Times, and the author of VOICES FROM THE PANDEMIC, TEN LETTERS, AMERICAN HUNGER, and RISING OUT OF HATRED, which won the 2019 Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He was awarded The Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting in 2014 and Feature Writing in 2023 and was a Pulitzer Finalist in Feature Writing in 2013, 2016 and 2017. The series on which this book is based won the 2020 George Polk award for Oral History.
