“I want to start this review by saying thank you so much to the author for reaching out and giving me an e-book edition to read! I’d also like to apologise for taking so long to post my review, I’ve been extremely busy with uni work.
My reading experience with this book was all over the place! One minute I was really getting into it and the next I was so confused I felt like I had missed something… there were so many times when I went back to read something because I genuinely thought my kindle had skipped a page.
When I first read the synopsis I was instantly intrigued by this gothic witchy read and the basis of the story was really strong but in the end it wasn’t for me unfortunately.
I loved the dark and twisted atmosphere along with the mystery elements of the story but I found the character depth lacking. For me, liking the characters is a big part of the reading experience but I felt like whilst we got glimpses into the Kasdeya’s past, the character depth was more shallow than I’d have liked. This was such a shame because even though the plot confused me at times, I think if I had felt more towards the characters I would have rated Villainess higher.
Again with the writing, it reminded me of how Tareah Maffi writes - very flowery and metaphorical. Whilst I appreciate a good metaphor, the ones used in this book were metaphors that could have actually happened, so it made it difficult to tell which was a writing technique and what was part of the story. Apart from that, the writing was good, it’s just a personal preference that I don’t tend to mesh well with heavily poetic-esc writing (I didn’t really enjoy Shatter Me either).”

A very interesting and gripping book, its a different genre (gothic fantasy) than i normally read but that didn't stop me from reading it. Not a fast paced plot, very easy to read. THE QUOTES IN THE BOOK WERE A VIBE! I loved the FMC so much. Highly recommend to all who love this type of genre.”
“I think the idea behind this book was great. However, I had an extremely hard time following along. The writing felt discombobulated and there were so many characters with similar names I could not remember who was who. I also had a hard time relating since all the characters where high school age. I wanted to be excited about the romance but at the same time I’m like “omg these are teenagers about to have sex. I don’t want to read about underage sex.”

First, I want to thank the author for reaching out and offering me an ARC in exchange for honest feedback. I truly admire the passion and bold vision behind Villainess. There is a powerful message at the heart of this story, one that centers on female rage, identity, and rebellion, and that kind of ambition is something I always respect. I would also like to apologize for the low rating.
That said, this book was not the right fit for me, and I had to step away at the 16% mark. I usually try to give a story at least 30% before deciding to DNF, but in this case, I found myself struggling to stay grounded in the narrative.
The writing style felt quite chaotic, with shifts between third person, first person, and other perspectives happening frequently, sometimes within the same scene. This made it difficult to follow the flow of the story or feel connected to the characters. I often found myself unsure of who was speaking or what exactly was unfolding. The story moved very quickly from character introductions to internal thoughts, emotional conflicts, and plot developments, and I think it would benefit from slowing down and giving each moment a little more space to breathe.
For me, the beginning of a book is especially important. It sets the tone and helps me decide if I want to stay in the world the author has created. In this case, I felt disoriented early on and struggled to feel anchored in the setting or the character dynamics. Still, I could sense that the atmosphere and world had great potential, and the concept behind the book is definitely something I am drawn to.
There were also a few vocabulary choices that gave me pause. I believe that being bold, even provocative or offensive, can be powerful in storytelling when used with intention and purpose. But it is just as important to ask why those words are being used. In some places, the wording felt abrupt or disconnected from the emotional tone of the scene. It left me questioning whether it was meant to challenge the reader or whether it was simply unexamined. Thoughtful language choices can heighten a story’s impact. Here, I think more reflection could have brought even more strength to the themes being explored.
In truth, I believe the author may thrive more in short fiction. There is an intensity and poetic quality in the writing that could shine more clearly in a format that allows for focused storytelling without needing to maintain complex structure across a longer arc. Working closely with an experienced editor might also help shape the author’s voice and sharpen the book’s focus, pacing, and narrative clarity.
Again, I offer this feedback with sincerity and hope it is helpful. There is passion here. There is voice. With more attention to structure, editing, and pacing, I believe this author could create something truly striking.
Though this one was not for me, I appreciate the opportunity to read it and wish the author all the best on their creative journey.”
“This is a darker read than my usual go-to, but overall I thought the premise of this book was pretty interesting. It took me a bit to figure out the context of the plot/what was going on, and Kasdeya and Alexander’s relationship perplexed me at times (but I think that was kind of the point). All of the mythology elements/characters were intriguing, and I started to get pulled into the story as I went.”
