Vicious

By V. E. Schwab
Vicious by V. E. Schwab digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

V. E. Schwab's New York Times bestseller Vicious is a masterful tale of ambition, jealousy, desire, and superpowers.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn't automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

"A dynamic and original twist on what it means to be a hero and a villain. A killer from page one…highly recommended!" —Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Marvel Universe vs The Avengers and Patient Zero

“This Book had been on my radar for a while — partly because I’ve enjoyed some of her other works, and partly because it seemed to have that gritty, morally complex vibe I usually love. Maybe it was the high expectations, or maybe it just wasn’t for me, but overall, I found this book underwhelming. To be fair, there are definitely things it does well. The nonlinear timeline was a smart structural choice, and Schwab handled it nicely... It added a layer of intrigue that kept the narrative from feeling stale, even when the plot itself didn’t always grip me. The characters, too, are refreshingly unconventional — morally ambiguous, hard to pin down, and often operating in that grey space where the line between hero and villain is VERY intentionally blurred. The book raises interesting questions about morality and power: What makes someone "good"? Is intention more important than action? Can a monster still think of themselves as the protagonist? These themes are woven through the story with nuance, and I appreciated that Schwab didn’t offer easy answers to second chances. But despite all that, the book just didn’t click for me emotionally. I never felt truly invested in any of the characters — their motivations made sense on paper, but I struggled to form any kind of emotional attachment. The urban setting also didn’t help. That’s purely a personal preference — the mystery/supernatural thriller vibe definitely brought something different to the table, and in that sense, it served as a decent palate cleanser from what I usually read. But the suspense never quite landed for me. It was trying to be tense and gripping, but I never felt that urgency... didn't rush to turn the pages, and my reading pace definitely reflected that lack of excitement. There were moments of sharp writing — quotes that made me pause and admire the phrasing — but they were scattered and not quite enough to elevate the whole experience. In the end, it all felt a bit... shallow. Like something that might make a better film than a book. Visually and thematically stylish, but lacking emotional depth. I’m glad I gave it a try, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the sequel.”
