“We need more sci-fi / mythology retellings in the world. This was quite interesting, although I was left confused and feeling somewhat unfulfilled. Given this is a short story, there wasn't a lot of room to expand upon things that I felt needed more details to give the story more weight.
I love the idea of Paris not wanting Helen, but instead giving the apple to Ilios, the city where he lives and that he loves, which is also personified through an actual person? Or is it an AI that he loves? It's all rather unclear. The paralleling of alternate realities towards the end unfortunately exacerbated my confusion and muddied the narrative IMO, but I suppose it serves to show the absolute futility of Troy's position even across eons.
The prose for this story was beautiful, but I felt it was unnecessarily purple at times which only served to confuse me further.
Very interesting premise overall and I would love to see this expanded on by the author. It's available DRM free through Reactor Mag's website here for those interested in reading it: https://reactormag.com/variations-on-an-apple-yoon-ha-lee/”

“As if anything is truly random in the stories we write for ourselves”
Variations on an Apple is a short story about a fortified city that is under attack and the relationship between a boy named Paris with Illion. Honestly, I don't understand what I just read because non of it made sense to me. Right now I'm just grappling with whatever I picked up from it. There were mentions of greek gods and goddesses and a few historical figures of the world, but I don't understand the significance of it to the story. Proceed with caution because it's a bit weird and hard to process.
