“I have so many feelings.
Firstly I was really excited to see that Uprooted was set around medieval Poland, however I was then pretty disappointed in the lack of any further historical inspiration as Poland has a rich history around Paganism that could have really built up the social structure and setting.
There was so much left unsaid regarding Agnieszka finding her magic. Her journey to acceptance was really nonexistent, she really just at one point went, “well guess this is me now” and continued from there. I was missing the character development this revelation inspired.
The Dragon, truly, what character development? For sure it was revealed that there were complexities to his personality and choices, but a lot of them were still questionable, just for different reasons at the end. The romance also felt weird, like it was added in after the fact, there wasn’t really any build up. I know Naomi Novak writes series more often than standalones so I’m looking forward to reading one as a lot of the hangups I had could have been resolved over time.”Magical settingDarkViolenceUnengaging characters

“I really loved the folklore and mythology aspects of this book. It’s a great standalone with a wonderful writing style and so many plot twists and interesting magical elements, particularly with the Wood.
