“When I heard that this book was a friends to lovers story I was really excited to read this book, however I quickly found out that it wasn't a friends to lover but more older brother's best friend story, which is slightly different. And though Violet and Cam were family friends they didn't have that best friends vibe that I was expecting so I was a little disappointed not gonna lie. But it did create the complication as well as created a backstory between the two. I liked they weren't strangers and they had a foundation to begin with.
With that being said the whole best friends older brother trope didn't feel like an overwhelming obstacle in this book compared to other books I have read with that same trope. It was there a bit, but just quickly brushed aside.
I was also disappointed with the lack of angst and intensity in this book. This could have been a crazy intense book with all the issues going between their histories as well as her past where she endured something truly horrific. That alone should have upped the intensity alone. It did explain her issues and why she was the way that she was, but I felt that once I found out the secret it was kind of glossed over and I don't know if it should have been. I think there should have been more of a struggle for her and actually being intimate with anyone. I get that she trusted and loved Cam, but I think it should have been a process that she went through with him on her role to healing. It was like it was put out there then they went to bed and the issue just disappeared. It was realistic. There needed to be more time and more build up before they hopped into bed I think. It would be better and more poignant when they finally went all the way. I needed the building blocks there. That would have increased both the intensity and angst to the story.
The angst was barely nonexistent. It was too easy for them to get together. There were no significant obstacles in their way. I should have been gutted by this story especially with the subject matter and I just wasn't. I didn't feel what I wanted to feel. I just wanted the story to dig deeper. This story had so much potential to do that and just didn't.
Now from above the comments you would think I didn't like this book and wonder why I gave it four stars. The fact was I did like it, and I just didn't think it deserved a three stars. I have a read a lot of three stars book this wasn't it. I didn't love the book, but I enjoyed it. It was a nice, quick read with the Christmasy theme.
I really did love the characters in this story. My heart hurt for both of them and what they went through in their pasts.
I loved Cam. He was so sweet and caring. He really thought of her needs and put her in front of himself. He never wanted to hurt her and was very clear and upfront what was to be expected of their relationship. He feared hurting which was why he vowed not to get involved. He wasn't a jerk at any time. He was a character I easily rooted for.
I enjoyed the love scenes in this story. It was truly about their connection and feelings towards one another. They were sexy. They were tender. There were hot as hell, showing how much passion was between them. They wee the highlight of the book because I felt during those scenes. Do I wish there was more build up between them? Yes. Do I wish they worked up to them a little bit more considering her past? Yes. I would have enjoyed it more if they took their time in the sensual arts to make it easier for her. Like have a few foreplay scenes then go all the way, but they were still very enjoyable to see them play out on the page.
I was just looking for a little bit more intensity and edge to this book than I got. I wanted more angst between them. It just needed to go deeper for me. I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't that edge that the best friends older theme that they usually have but that barely seemed to be issue here. I just needed more punch. But I did enjoy the characters and the passion that they shared making the story enjoyable and worth reading in the end.”
